It began three decades ago with a romance kindled in the bazaars of North Africa and ended seven years ago in the somewhat more prosaic surroundings of the foyer of a Birmingham hotel.
At its height, Karen Millen was one of the most recognised names on the High Street and a byword for style and quality. It was the product of a powerful partnership.
Karen met Kevin Stanford, the man who would become her romantic and business partner, when they were both on holiday in Morocco in 1980. It was, she says, ‘love at first sight’.
Together they turned a tiny shirt-making business, funded by a £100 bank loan, into an extra-ordinarily successful fashion brand. They made millions when they sold it seven years ago to an Icelandic company. [Athensreport]
